An estimated 7,000,000 cats and dogs are killed in shelters every year. National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy Shelter Statistics Survey (1997 data).

Over 50% of the cats and dogs surrendered to shelters have not been spayed or neutered. Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, Vol. 1, Number 3, pg. 213.
