Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a virus that makes your cat more susceptible to disease by suppressing its immune system. You CANNOT catch FIV from your cat, and FIV is NOT transmissible to humans. FIV is strictly in felines. Your cat cannot give FIV to your dog, horse, ferret, etc. You cannot "spread" FIV with you throughout the day - humans cannot be carriers for FIV.
FIV is only transmissible through cat bites or blood transfusions with another cat. Infection by casual contact (e.g., using common food bowls or litter pans) does not occur. To date, it does not appear that an infected female can pass the virus to her kittens before they are born or through her milk. Again, FIV is very specifically adapted to infect cats; human beings are not at risk from this disease.
Although there is no cure for this virus, if you keep your FIV positive cat strictly indoors and in a healthy environment (i.e., away from any sick cats), and work toward reducing stress on the cat as much as possible he/she can still live a happy, long life. The most important point to stress is that FIV positive cats MUST be kept away from other cats. This is for the safety of the other cats as well as the FIV+ cat. You see other healthy cats can carry viruses and germs that will not affect a cat with a healthy immune system, but which could devastate a cat with FIV. Keeping your cat indoors and reducing the stress in its environment and exposure to other cats is one of the best ways to keep an FIV positive cat healthy.
FIV-positive cats may live for many years. With good health care aimed at recognizing and treating FIV-associated problems early, these kitties can enjoy a long good quality of life. All efforts should be taken to preserve their health by catching even the smallest sign of illness early and protecting them against other diseases and injury.
An excellent article on Fighting FeLV much of which is equally applicable for FIV.
